Who will be the Chicago Bears quarterback of the future?

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have made it pretty clear that they don’t think Mitchell Trubisky is the answer for them at quarterback. The question now: Who is?

Three years ago, the Bears made the decision to trade up to the second-overall pick for Mitchell Trubisky. As we all know, they passed on Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

While Bears fans cringe anytime this is brought up, there has been a development. The team declined his fifth-year option and with doing that, admitted its mistake in drafting him.

Trubisky hasn’t been JaMarcus Russell. He went to the Pro Bowl in 2018 after throwing 24 touchdowns. He helped the Bears win the NFC North for the first time since 2010 and as a result, get to the playoffs where they narrowly lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

This past year, however, it was blatantly obvious Trubisky isn’t the guy.

General manager Ryan Pace signaled this by trading for Nick Foles this offseason. And, let’s be honest here, Foles isn’t a quality starter. At best, he’s a top-tier backup.

So while bringing Foles in gives Chicago a bridge, he’s not going to be their guy moving forward. Instead, the Bears will aim to land a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The problem with that is they’ll need to likely tank to land a talent like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields and while the Bears have a quarterback problem, their defense is still good enough to get them to 8-8.

There’s always a quarterback or two who come out of nowhere and propel themselves into the first round (i.e. Jordan Love, Daniel Jones, Trubisky also falls into this category) and might be someone who interests the Bears too.

A more realistic option for Chicago in the 2021 NFL Draft could be Jamie Newman of Georgia or Brock Purdy of Iowa State. They could also try to sign someone like Andy Dalton or Cam Newton next offseason, but with Foles having at least another two years remaining on his contract, affording one of those guys might not be a realistic scenario.
