Tony Gonzalez jokes he’s making a Chiefs comeback

Kansas City Chiefs

Tony Gonzalez shared a video of him working out and said he was ready to make a comeback for the Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously this is a joke, but Gonzalez’s tweet has stirred up some discussions.

Would Tony Gonzalez really return to football? That’s what the buzz is amongst Kansas City Chiefs fans on Tuesday after the Hall of Fame tight end tweeted a video of him working out and mentioning a potential comeback.

Gonzalez returning isn’t realistic at all, as he’s 44 years old and has been out of the league since 2013, but this tweet might have gone along with the news that Rob Gronkowski is coming out of retirement to join the Buccaneers.

Gonzalez is one of the all-time greats not just in Chiefs history, but in all of the NFL. After being the 13th overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft, Gonzalez spent the next 12 years with the Chiefs and was a bright spot for them even during some really rough seasons.

During that time, Gonzalez totaled 10,940 yards and 76 touchdowns, both of which lead the Chiefs to this day. When Gonzalez was eventually traded to the Falcons and won a playoff game, it was bittersweet because it was nice to see him on a winning team, but it was unfortunate that he wanted to move on.

Gonzalez made headlines amongst Chiefs fans last summer when he commented on how the Falcons made his career, even after all of the accolades he had stacked up in Kansas City.

No, Gonzalez isn’t going to return to the NFL, but imagine having him and Travis Kelce as the starting tight ends. It didn’t seem likely that the Chiefs would ever have a tight end that held a candle to Gonzalez, but Kelce has been tremendous since joining the team in 2013, which ironically, is the last year that Gonzalez played in the NFL.

Now a part of the FOX NFL Sunday crew, Gonzalez has seen success after football and that – paired with his age, of course – is a big reason why a return for him wouldn’t be realistic. Even if he did decide to return to play, he still had one year remaining on his deal, so the Falcons would technically own his rights.

There’d also be drama with him and Chiefs fans, as many were hurt by his comments and would point to him only wanting to return to Kansas City due to their recent Super Bowl title.

While all of this is a joke, Gonzalez returning is still something fun to think about.
