For one quarter, it looked like the Kansas City Chiefs would become the latest big favorite to go down in flames in the AFC Playoffs. But then the second quarter started and Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs took control to eliminate the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs dug themselves a 24-0 hole thanks to some shoddy special teams work that saw the Texans block a punt and return it for a touchdown and Tyreek Hill fumbled a punt return. But Mahomes proceeded to demonstrate why he is the best quarterback on this planet.

That 24-0 lead vanished when Mahomes threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter. Thanks to an assist from Bill O’Brien’s bizarre decision to fake a punt deep in his own end up 24-7 and a fumbled kickoff, the Chiefs kept getting the ball back to Mahomes, who found ways to keep getting the ball into the end zone.

Mahomes led a postseason record seven straight touchdown drives after falling behind 24-0, with the eighth driving resulting in a field goal. Mahomes was his MVP self, completing 23-of-35 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns, adding 56 rushing yards on four carries.

He became the first quarterback in playoff history to have at least 300 pass yards and 50 rush yards.

The Texans had no answer for Mahomes, who put the Chiefs on his back and absolutely willed them to victory when even the most die-hard Kansas City fans were ready to mail in this game.

Rallying from 24-0 down to win a playoff game would already be one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history, but the fact Mahomes was able to wipe out the deficit in just over nine minutes of action is absurd.

While a good amount of attention from this game will go to the epic choke job the Texans pulled and whether it should cost O’Brien his job, we can’t ignore that Mahomes bull-rushed through the door Houston left open.

Mahomes is now one win away from his first career Super Bowl appearance, and even with a red-hot Tennessee Titans’ team heading to Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday you have to love the Chiefs’ chances because they have the best quarterback in the planet.
