Drew Brees exits Saints game with wrist injury

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are out for revenge after being robbed of a Super Bowl appearance last season, but they can’t afford any injuries to Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees.

In Week 1, the New Orleans Saints survived an upset bid from the Houston Texans, receiving a gift from head coach Bill O’Brien en route to a win on Monday Night Football. The Saints needed the momentum boost heading into their critical Week 2 tilt with the Los Angeles Rams, who defeated New Orleans in last year’s NFC Championship Game via the controversial non-call of a defensive pass interference.

Unfortunately for the Saints, after going down 3-0 in the first quarter, Hall-of-Fame quarterback Drew Brees went down with a wrist injury.

Brees was forced to exit the game, and ESPN’s Mike Triplett reported that he needed his right, throwing hand to be taped up on the sideline.

He appeared to suffer the injury when his hand hit defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s hand.

Thankfully, the Saints have one of the NFL’s best backup quarterbacks in Teddy Bridgewater, who is a former first-round pick and the potential heir to Sean Payton’s explosive offense.

Bridgewater will have the tall task of facing Donald and the Rams defense, but he’ll benefit from a few top-notch weapons in Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, and Jared Cook.

Still, even though Bridgewater has the accuracy, pocket presence, and experience to lead the Saints to victory, the team needs Brees to be healthy this season. He’s one of the best players in NFL history and the Saints biggest icon ever. This team has clear Super Bowl aspirations, and they’ll need Brees to be healthy to get there.

But they also can’t afford to rush Brees if there’s chance this wrist injury lingers. He’ll be more needed later in the year, so if they have to start Bridgewater in the near future, then they should trust the talented young quarterback. Since this injury is to Brees’s throwing hand, more precaution may be needed.

Saints fans will certainly be glued for any and all updates regarding the superstar quarterback’s injury status.
