Jadeveon Clowney prefers trade to Eagles, Seahawks

Houston Texans

As his situation comes to a proverbial head, Jadeveon Clowney reportedly has two teams he’d prefer to be traded to.

Jadeveon Clowney was apparently not going to extend his holdout into the regular season, with a report early this month he would sign his franchise tender and report to the Houston Texans after the third preseason game. That game came last Saturday night, with no sign of Clowney at Texans’ practice.

Clowney fired his agent Bus Cook on Tuesday, as a nod to how poorly long-term contract talks with the Texans have gone and apparently not being on the same page regarding his future. That move is a sign he’d like to report, if only to make a trade happen.

The Miami Dolphins surfaced quickly as a potential suitor for Clowney, before some indication he wouldn’t sign a long-term deal with them. But Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has reported the Dolphins see themselves as the front runner to get Clowney, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network adding Clowney has met in person with head coach Brian Flores and other members of the organization.

Clowney’s interest in the Dolphins seems to have changed. But he reportedly has two other teams higher on his list of preferred trade destinations.

As Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle pointed out, Clowney has leverage since has has not yet signed his franchise tender. If he’d prefer to go to the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks or another playoff contender, rather than the rebuilding Dolphins, he can just continue to hold out until his wish is on the table.

Clowney appears to be tired of being in limbo, with a long-term deal no longer possible this year and Week 1 approaching. It seems much of the blame on the former matter will fall on his now-former agent, but the Texans currently not having a general manager can’t help either. In any case, Clowney’s situation seems to finally be pushing toward a resolution.
