Browns sign Demetrius Harris: Grade, reaction, analysis

Cleveland Browns, NFL Free Agency

After some more notable moves this week, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms with tight end Demetrius Harris.

The Cleveland Browns have been one of the more active teams this week, with a couple big trades in the pipeline to go with the signing of defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson in free agency. But they’ve moved to add some depth too, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting they will sign tight end Demetrius Harris.

Harris spent the first five seasons of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, with 57 receptions for 605 yards and six touchdowns as a backup to Travis Kelce. In 2018 he averaged a career-best 13.7 yards per catch, with three touchdowns on his 12 receptions.

Harris signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2013, when Browns’ general manager John Dorsey occupied the same post in Kansas City.

Contract Details

Schefter reported Harris will sign a two-year deal with the Browns. Financial terms have not been released yet.

National Reaction

Schefter pointed to Harris as “yet another weapon” for quarterback Baker Mayfield, but that has gotten some rebuttal from the masses.

In terms of role Harris will make a lateral move, replacing the released Darren Fells as the Browns’ No. 2 tight end behind David Njoku, who played just shy of 80 percent of the offensive snaps last year. Similar to the Chiefs, Cleveland is deep with weapons as Odell Beckham Jr. will join Jarvis Landry, Njoku, Nick Chubb, Duke Johnson etc. So Harris will have a hard time making real hay as a pass catcher, as long as Njoku is healthy.

At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, Harris probably has a place in the Browns’ offense as a red zone weapon. He’ll presumably play a lot on special teams, as he did with the Chiefs, but Fells did play 38.5 percent of the Browns’ offensive snaps last year. That would be a slight uptick for Harris, as he played 35.5 percent of the snaps last year for Kansas City (via Football Outsiders).
