Rams need more of Todd Gurley in the second half

Los Angeles Rams

C.J. Anderson has been a great story for the Rams over the last few weeks, but they need more of Todd Gurley to vanquish the Saints.

Todd Gurley scored the Rams only touchdown of the first half, but that doesn’t mean he got the touches he needed from Sean McVay. The only way Los Angeles is going to knock off the Saints in the second half, is if they ride their franchise running back.

In fairness to Sean McVay, Gurley endured a pretty ugly start to the game. He was at fault for Jared Goff’s interception by letting the pass bounce off his hands. Another key drop later in the first half caused a promising Rams drive to sputter.

That resulted in McVay giving C.J. Anderson seven carries in the opening half. He responded with a reasonable return of 29 yards. He also added one catch for give additional yards. It’s important to note that Anderson’s longest play from scrimmage was only an eight yard rush. The Saints defense will be happy to force Los Angeles to try to complete long, plodding drives against them as the game wears on.

That’s why McVay needs to go with the running back who got his team this far. That’s obviously Gurley. He’s a much more dangerous weapon than Anderson is in the backfield. Every time he touches the football he has the ability to take it to the house. Despite his struggles in the passing game during the first half, he’s clearly a much more dangerous receiver than Anderson.

If the Rams only give Gurley three carries in the second half they are going to see their season end in New Orleans. The team’s best chance at advancing to the Super Bowl is to remember just how dynamic Gurley can be. The Rams need to rely on their best players when the stakes are at their highest. McVay has to feed Gurley down the stretch if he wants to win.
