Browns working on hiring Mike McCarthy as next head coach

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are playing out the string, and are planning to replace Gregg Williams with Mike McCarthy as their next head coach.

After firing Hue Jackson in late October, the Browns quietly began their search for their next head coach. With the firing of Mike McCarthy in Green Bay, that quest is about to become much noisier.

Sources have told FanSided that the Browns are already working on whether they will hire McCarthy. McCarthy has obvious ties to the Cleveland front office, most-notably general manager John Dorsey, vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith and assistant general manager Eliot Wolf.

All three worked in Green Bay while McCarthy was in the building, with Highsmith and Wolf being there until joining Dorsey in Cleveland in December.

McCarthy, 55, had been with the Packers since 2006, winning Super Bowl in 2010. However, things have been rocky since, only reaching one NFC title game in that span. While McCarthy won a total of six NFC North titles and compiled a regular-season record of 125-77-2, many believed he never evolved with Aaron Rodgers, failing to put an imaginative offense around him in recent years.

In Cleveland, McCarthy would have the opportunity to get another first-round quarterback in Baker Mayfield, who has shined in his rookie year. The Browns are a middling 4-7-1 but have intriguing parts and a bevy of cap space, making the job intriguing. At 55 years old, it makes sense for McCarthy to take one more job before going into retirement.
